August 20, 1954 in Cadillac, Michigan. Dick spent his early years in the
communities of Manton, Michigan, Baldwin, Michigan and St, Marys, Ohio.
Dick and his wife Melanie have a son and currently live in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Dick is a self taught carver
and carved his first fish decoy in 1996. Dicks work is inspired by
two great legendary carvers from Michigan, Oscar W. Peterson and Bud Stewart. Dick lists his favorite
carvers as Sonny Bashore, Oscar Peterson and Bud Stewart A pair of Blue ribbon winners at
the Livonia, Michigan show in the Fall of 1999. Dick Goldsmith (on right)

Goldsmith (above and below). Dick carves his decoys out of
basswood, the fins are made of copper and the finished product is hand
painted with oil paints. Dick signs his decoys on the
bottom with "Gold" and the year it was carved. As of December
31, 1999 Dick has carved approximately 25 fish decoys. The following are awards that Dick
Goldsmith has won,
during his young carving career, from the Great Lakes Fish Decoy Association: Honorable Mention Working Pike, 1996. 3rd Place Decorative Working Pike, 1997. 3rd Place Folky Decorative Decoy,
